Day 223 – 365 / August 11th 2015
Bootham Crescent, York.
A short time after my team, Bradford City, were knocked out of the League Cup at the first round stage by York City.
To be truthful we didn’t play especially well. First half we were the better team and created numerous chances from open play. We took the lead from a well flighted free kick by Alan Sheehan that went to the far side of the penalty box and was lashed home wonderfully by a stunning volley from Christopher Routis. 1-0 to us at the break.
York were the better team in the second half and equalised from a penalty given harshly against us. We had a chance to regain the lead from the penalty spot but our spot kick went high over the bar and is probably still rising now. They then went 2-1 up from a superbly struck free kick. The game went onto injury time with us trailing and chasing the game. Our James Hanson, on as a substitute today struck in the final seconds of injury time to take the match into extra time.
Extra time saw no further goals and so it went to a penalty shootout. Which we lost. And out of the cup we go.
